Brief History of the Office of the Accountant General (A&E), Punjab

1947

  • Established in Shimla as the Office of the Accountant General, Punjab, following the Partition of India.

1966

  • Renamed as Accountant General, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh after the reorganization of states.

Post-1966

  • Trifurcated into three separate offices for Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh to ensure administrative efficiency.

1st April 1969

  • Office shifted to Chandigarh to better serve the reorganized state structure.

1st March 1984

  • Reconstituted as an independent Accounts Office following bifurcation of Audit and Accounts functions.

  • Since then, functioning as Accountant General (A&E), Punjab, Chandigarh


1989

  • Various wings of the office shifted into the newly constructed building.

  • Computerization of pension authorization process for State Govt. employees started.

1991

  • Recreation library established with books on diverse subjects.

  • Treasury inspection work started from 1st April 1991, as allotted by Headquarters.

1994

  • Crèche “ANINDITA” inaugurated on 16th March 1994 by Smt. Indira Somiah to support working mothers.

1999

  • VLC system introduced, replacing manual posting of Accounts; computerized Accounts sent to State Govt. thereafter.

  • Organized zonal & inter-zonal sports tournaments (Hockey, Cricket, Volleyball, Badminton, etc.) every year.

2006

  • Pension case status made available online on the official website.

  • Branch offices at Nangal & Patiala shifted to main office.

  • Assigned compilation of combined Finance & Revenue Accounts of States on a permanent basis by Headquarters.

2011

  • System Automated Initiative (SAI) Pension Programme launched on 25th July 2011 in Pension Wing.

  • Implemented for processing and revision of pension cases of Punjab Govt. retirees.

  • Pairing of vouchers for pension, gratuity, and commutation initiated under SAI.
