This office was formed at Calcutta in the year 1882 as Comptroller, India Treasuries. In 1919, it was re-named as the Office of the Accountant General, Central Revenues. This office was shifted to Delhi in 1924 and functioned from the President’s Bodyguard Lines, Curzon Road Hutments till, the present building located Indraprastha Estate was constructed in 1956. After independence this office became the Principal Audit Office responsible for transactions of the Government of India. In April 1979 it was renamed as the Office of the Director of Audit, Central Revenues. It was renamed in May 1985 as Director of Audit, Central Revenues-I, New Delhi, consequent upon its restructuring into the offices of Director of Audit, Central Revenues-II, New Delhi. In February 1990, the office was renamed as the Office of the Principal Director of Audit-I, Central Revenues. This name was changed in September 1992 to "Office of the Director General of Audit, Central Revenues", New Delhi. In July 2009, consequent upon restructuring into two separate offices viz., Office of the Director General of Audit (Central Expenditure), New Delhi and Office of the Director General of Audit (Central Receipt), New Delhi, this office was again renamed as "Office of the Director General of Audit (Central Expenditure)", New Delhi. In March 2020, consequent upon restructuring into two separate offices viz., Office of the Director General of Audit (Home, Education and Skill Development), New Delhi and Office of the Principal Director of Audit (Health, Welfare and Rural Development), New Delhi, this office was again renamed as " Director General of Audit (Home, Education and Skill Development), New Delhi". In August 2022, Consequent upon merger of office of the DGA (Home, Education & Skill Development) and Office of the DGA (Health Welfare & Rural Development), this office is again renamed as “Director General of Audit (Central Expenditure), New Delhi”.
