The Defence Audit Wing, of which this office is a part, was formed in the year 1922 in Hqrs. office and was initially headed by a Deputy Auditor General. However, in June 1973, the audit of Ordnance Factories was entrusted to a Chief Auditor subsequently re – designated as Director General of Audit, Ordnance Factories with Headquarters at Kolkata where the offices of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board and Director General of Ordnance Factories were located. However, since the Ordnance Factories were scattered across the country, five regional offices based in Avadi, Ambajhari, Jabalpur, Kanpur and Kirkee were formed and headed by Group Officers of the rank of Director/Dy. Director of Audit.

Prior to corporatization of OFB, the audit universe of this office comprised of 175 units, chiefly 41 ordnance factories, 41 attached accounts offices and other allied units. This office was responsible for the Performance, Compliance and Thematic Audit/Long Para of the above-mentioned units.

However, following the Government of India’s decision to corporatize the OFB with effect from 1 October 2021 the OFB was split into 7 wholly Government – owned DPSUs and the management, control, operations and maintenance of the 41 ordnance factories was divided amongst these 7 DPSUs based on their respective production activities.
