1969	The Office of the Chief Auditor, Railway Production Units was set up for the audit of accounts and records of: Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Chittaranjan, Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, and Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, Madras.
1^st October, 1974	Audit of Metro Railway, Kolkata was entrusted to this office.
March, 1990	The office was renamed as Office of the Principal Director of Audit, Railway Production Units & Metro Railway.
5^th June, 1997	Audit jurisdiction of ICF, Perambur came under Principal Director of Audit, Southern Railway, Chennai
28^th May, 2012	Audit of Public Sector Undertaking (Railways) had been entrusted to this office.
27^th October, 2020	Diesel Locomotive Works was renamed as Banaras Locomotive Works
